QuickBooks in a nutshell

If you’re running a business, there’s a good chance you’ve got a spreadsheet somewhere that’s become far more important than it was ever meant to be.

What started as a simple list of invoices somehow ends up tracking expenses, payments, VAT, receipts and half a dozen other things. It works for a while, right up until the point where finding something means scrolling through hundreds of rows and hoping it’s there.

That’s probably why QuickBooks has become such a familiar name. Speak to an accountant and you’ll likely hear it mentioned. Speak to another accountant and you’ll probably hear it again.

With QuickBooks, you’ll get a clearer picture of what’s going on in your business without having to spend your evenings buried in spreadsheets.

And let’s be honest, if you’ve started a business, you’d probably rather spend your time winning customers, launching something new or finishing work a bit earlier on a Friday.

QuickBooks pricing

QuickBooks isn’t the cheapest option available, but accounting software is one of those purchases where the value isn’t always obvious until you’ve gone without it.

If you’re only sending the occasional invoice, you can probably manage perfectly well without paying for dedicated software. Once the business starts getting busier though, keeping everything organised becomes a lot more important.

The monthly cost depends on the plan you choose, but plenty of businesses see it in the same way they see their website, payment system or business bank account. It’s just part of running things properly.

Unlike half the software subscriptions you’re paying for, you’ll probably actually use this one.

QuickBooks pros and cons

Pros

  • Popular with accountants
  • Keeps finances organised
  • Works for most small businesses
  • Connects to business bank accounts
  • Can save a lot of admin time

Cons

  • Monthly subscription cost
  • Some features require higher-tier plans

Our thoughts

QuickBooks feels like one of those products that quietly becomes part of how a business operates.

You don’t really hear people getting excited about accounting software, but you do hear people getting excited about having a clearer picture of their finances, getting paid faster and spending less time chasing paperwork.

We also like the fact that QuickBooks has been around long enough that accountants, bookkeepers and business owners all seem to know it. That makes life a bit easier when you’re asking for help or advice.

If you’re spending more time than you’d like trying to keep track of everything, QuickBooks is well worth a look.
