Salomon in a nutshell

Salomon isn't really a sportswear brand. It's more of a mountain brand.

The company started in the French Alps and spent years making ski equipment before becoming one of the biggest names in trail running, hiking and outdoor gear.

The shoes are what most people know Salomon for. Particularly the trail running shoes. If you've ever watched a trail race or spent time around serious runners, you've probably seen plenty of Salomons. They seem to be everywhere.

Salomon is also responsible for those pull-cord laces that look slightly ridiculous until you actually use them. Then suddenly normal laces feel like a lot of unnecessary effort.

One thing we like about Salomon is that the products feel like they have a purpose. Nothing feels like it's there just to look good. Whether it's a trail running shoe, a hiking boot or a waterproof jacket, it feels like somebody has actually taken it outdoors and tested it properly.

Ironically, Salomon has become fashionable too. You'll spot Salomon trainers on hiking trails, but you'll also spot them in city centres, coffee shops and offices. Not bad for a company that started out making ski equipment in the Alps.

Salomon pricing

Salomon is on the premium end of shoes and gear. And to be fair, for good reason, the product quality is great.

Trail running shoes regularly cost over £100 and some of the more technical footwear costs considerably more. The same applies to the clothing and outdoor gear.

That said, Salomon isn't really trying to compete with budget brands.

Most people buying Salomon are looking for performance and durability rather than the cheapest possible price. If you're halfway through a long hike in terrible weather, that's usually the point where quality starts to matter.

There’s sometimes bargains on the site too. So keep checking if you’re on a budget.

Salomon pros and cons

Pros

  • Great quality outdoor gear

Cons

  • Premium pricing (but worth it)

Our thoughts

Salomon feels authentic. Which we love.

There are plenty of brands that sell outdoor gear, but Salomon feels like it was built by people who genuinely enjoy being outdoors. The products have a feel to them that makes you know it’s good quality, and going to protect you in all weathers.

We also love that the trainers can be seen out and about in coffee shops and pubs. You might just see us out in them too.

If you spend most weekends on trails, in the hills or generally outside, Salomon is one of those brands that's well worth a look.
