A fractional share, is a little portion of a whole share, it’s a fraction of a share (remember your school days?). For instance, you could buy 50% of 1 share, or 0.5 shares. You decide how much of the share you want to buy too.
They’re popular because some shares have a very high price, and buying a whole share might not be a sensible idea for low value portfolios, it might be too risky to have too much of your portfolio in one share. You also simply might not have enough cash to buy a whole share.
