Showing my age, but I’ve been an Octopus Energy customer for a fair few years now. Before that, I was with British Gas and a few of the other ‘Big Six’ energy suppliers who pretty much dominated the UK market before Octopus Energy came along (they were British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Npower, Scottish Power, and SSE). In my opinion, Octopus Energy is far superior to the others. Read on to find out why.
I know switching energy suppliers sounds like a massive pain, and the thought of having no energy during the switching process sounds daunting. Well, fear not. Thanks to the Energy Switch Guarantee, your new energy provider (company) will handle everything for you. All you’ll need to do is supply a meter reading or two, which is easy to do. And it’s guaranteed that you’ll never be without energy during the switching process. You won't even have to speak to your current supplier. Simply sign up with Octopus Energy¹, and they’ll take care of the whole process.

First of all, as much as I want to help save the planet, cost is an important factor for me and I’m sure it is for you too. I’ll dive into the different tariffs (energy plans) and the prices later, but from my personal experience over the years, Octopus Energy has consistently been one of the cheapest energy suppliers. And if you think renewable energy comes with a higher price tag, think again, it can actually be cheaper.
Find out the costs on the Octopus Energy website¹.
So, what do they actually offer? The main services are supplying gas and electricity to your home or business. And to be honest, it’s the same energy whatever company you use. The real difference is where the energy comes from. With Octopus Energy, it is a lot greener.
Apart from great service and competitive pricing, Octopus Energy is known for being environmentally friendly. They’re on a mission to power the planet with cheap, clean energy, having invested £6 billion in renewables and committed a further £15 billion in offshore wind, enough to power 10 million homes.
The nice guys at Octopus Energy will give our readers £50 credit for switching (that's you!) 🎉
The electricity Octopus Energy provides is ‘100% renewable’ and none of it comes from fossil fuels. Meaning, for every bit of electricity you use, they ensure an equivalent amount is generated from renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro. So you can sleep easy knowing that you’re doing your part for the environment.
Important: the electricity that comes into your home is exactly the same no matter which supplier you choose. What differs is how each supplier sources it. You’ll never get ‘weaker’ electricity from one company than another.
Gas, unfortunately, is gas, and it’s not renewable. To counteract this, Octopus Energy offsets the emissions from the gas their customers use. This means they invest in carbon reduction projects (such as reforestation or renewable energy projects).
You can help the environment even further by getting Octopus Energy to install solar panels, which come with a 25-year warranty. Over time, this can save you a small fortune, they claim to save around 90% off electricity bills. And you can even sell electricity back to the grid for others to use. There is an upfront cost, payable in full or via flexible options. Getting a quote is easy, see how much solar panels could cost¹.
A heat pump is a heating system that takes heat from the air or ground outside and moves it into your home to provide heating and hot water. It’s a replacement for your boiler.
Octopus Energy’s Cosy heat pump comes with an 8-year warranty, a hot water cylinder, smart controls, and they even help you to apply for a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
They handle everything from the survey to installation, highlight any costs up front, and offer flexible payment options. The result is lower bills, it’s great for the environment, and is a long-lasting alternative to gas heating. To find out more visit the Octopus Energy website¹. Plus get £50 when you sign up¹.
Energy prices are high, and have been for a while now. But luckily there’s a price cap. This is set by Ofgem, and they limit what energy companies can charge on standard tariffs. It doesn’t make energy cheap, but it prevents bills from climbing even higher.
From 1 October 2025, Ofgem’s energy price cap will set a typical dual-fuel household (gas and electric) bill at about £1,755 a year, roughly 2% higher than the previous quarter.
With energy deals, you can choose either a fixed rate or a variable rate. A fixed rate keeps the price of your energy the same for a set period, such as 12 months. A variable rate changes according to the cost of energy at the time. More on this below.
There are many energy companies offering a wide range of plans and tariffs. To make it easier to understand, let’s compare the annual energy costs for a typical UK household using 3,100 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas, paying by Direct Debit, based on the Standard Variable Tariffs of major suppliers.
As you can see, the tariffs above are all fairly similar, but each is above the Ofgem price cap on 1 October 2025. This means suppliers will need to lower their prices in the coming weeks to comply with the cap.
In fact, you can make Octopus Energy the cheapest option by signing up through Nuts About Money and you’ll get £50 credit. Simply head to the Octopus Energy website¹ to get started.
Note: with Octopus Energy’s flexible tariff, there are no exit fees. Unlike the other big providers, Octopus are so confident you’ll love being with them that they don’t need to add a fee to leave.
Got an electric car? Octopus Energy helps you switch to cleaner, cheaper driving by combining home and public charging. Their smart EV tariffs (like Intelligent Octopus Go) let you charge at lower off-peak rates while using more of their green energy to power your car.
They provide home charger installation (from £899), access to lots of public chargers through their “Electroverse” network under one app and bill, and schemes like salary sacrifice so you can get an EV more affordably through your employer.
Customer reviews mention how helpful the installation team was at every stage of the set up process, how cheap it was to recharge their car at night and the app makes it easy to manage. There’s some negative reviews about preinstalled home charging points that aren’t compatible, so make sure you check first on the Octopus Energy website¹. Plus get £50 when you sign up¹.
Intelligent Octopus Go is a tariff for electrical cars (EVs) that help charge your car at a low cost. It offers an EV charging rate of 7p per kWh, significantly cheaper than standard nighttime electricity, and includes six hours every night of cheap electricity for your whole home. However, this tariff is slightly more expensive during the day.
Simply use the Octopus app to connect your car or charger, set how much charge you need, and the system schedules charging automatically at the cheapest and greenest times. The app also lets you track spend and easily adjust charging plans.
Note: this tariff isn’t compatible with all charging points and cars, please check for your car.
Octopus Go is an EV tariff compatible with all car models and offers 5 hours of cheap energy every night.
Intelligent Drive Pack is a subscription service from Octopus Energy designed for electric vehicle (EV) owners who want unlimited, smart home charging without switching to a full smart tariff. For a fixed fee of £30 per month, it offers scheduled charging during off-peak hours.
Octopus Electroverse is an EV charging app by Octopus Energy. It provides access to over 1 million public chargers across Europe. Users can locate chargers, filter by type and speed, and view real-time availability. The platform also offers features like Plunge Pricing, which provides discounts when energy prices drop.
While I think Octopus Energy is fantastic, their tariffs can be a bit confusing. We’ve mentioned a few of these above, but here’s a quick overview of the most popular options. If you have any questions, their customer service team is always on hand to help.
Fixed Tariffs – you’ll get the same energy rate for 12 months.
Flexible Tariffs – energy rates change every three months.
Octopus Tracker – rates change daily.
Agile Octopus – rates change every half hour.
Intelligent Octopus Go – Designed for electric vehicle (EV) owners (see above).
Intelligent Octopus Flux – Ideal for homes with solar panels and battery storage.
Outgoing Octopus – pays 15p per kWh for solar energy sent back to the grid.
Outgoing Agile – allows you to sell electricity back to the grid and get paid based on the wholesale price for the next day.

As I’ve mentioned, customer service is one of Octopus Energy’s main focuses. In my experience, their UK-based team has been excellent, polite, understanding and genuinely eager to resolve any issues.
I’m clearly not alone in this. After researching, it’s obvious that Octopus Energy is well liked. Customer reviews praise their quick response times, clear communication by phone and email, genuine care for their customers, and their polite and professional approach overall.
Of course, no company can please everyone. A small minority have found the staff unhelpful, with a “computer says no” attitude, but these cases appear to be rare.
When it comes to getting in touch with support, you can call between 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 4pm on Fridays. Or, you can email them 7 days per week.
While not every review can be taken at face value, it’s clear that many others also rate Octopus Energy highly. Here’s a selection of the awards they’ve won and the ratings they’ve received.
Octopus Energy’s Trustpilot rating is currently 4.8 out 5 from hundreds of thousand reviews. With 90% giving them 5 stars and only 3% giving them 1 star.
Which? has recommended Octopus Energy for seven consecutive years. They were the clear winner for several years, though some competitors are now catching up. Even so, it remains a very impressive achievement.
In December 2024, YouGov surveyed 2,215 UK adults online, and Octopus Energy stood out as the company most strongly associated with trustworthiness.
A Net Promoter Score is a one question survey, "How likely would you be to recommend this company to a friend or colleague?" Octopus Energy’s score was +25, and the industry average -14. That’s not plus 14, it’s minus 14! A difference of 39 points.
I’m trying to keep this review short, but honestly, there’s loads of great ideas and initiatives that Octopus Energy¹ offers. Here’s a few worth mentioning…
The Octopus Energy smart meter is a digital gas and/or electricity meter that automatically sends your usage to Octopus Energy (so you don’t need to submit manual readings). It also shows your real-time energy usage in pounds and kilowatt-hours on an in-home display, helping you track costs, and manage your bills more easily.
Octoplus is a free loyalty scheme that lets you earn Octopoints to get discounts on your energy bills and enjoy perks like free coffees, vouchers, and giveaways. Think of it as a loyalty card for your home’s energy. It might seem like a bit of a gimmick, but the points do add up!
This playful little feature lets you submit your meter readings and earn a free spin on a “wheel of fortune” to win prizes. You get one spin per month for each type of energy. While it may be a clever way to encourage keeping your meter readings up to date, it’s fun and effective. Prizes range from 1p to £512 in energy credit.
Octoplus Saving Sessions rewards customers for reducing their electricity usage during peak times in Winter, helping to ease pressure on the national grid. Customers receive notifications about upcoming sessions, and after each session, savings are calculated based on smart meter data, and rewards are added to the customer's account. It’s a win-win, and a great idea!
Octo Assist is a £30 million customer support fund launched by Octopus Energy to help customers facing financial difficulties with their energy bills. It offers a variety of support including electric blankets and grants. Well done Octopus! We love to see companies helping out where possible.
Octopus Energy has a great mobile app and website that lets you manage your account, including checking your bills, making payments, seeing your current tariff and switching plans, and much more.
Best of all, the app lets you track how much gas and electricity you are using each day, how much it costs, and a breakdown by month and year. To get up-to-date information, you’ll need a smart meter provided by Octopus Energy (see above). The app shows your usage in kWh (kilowatt-hours) and the cost in pounds.
It’s great for budgeting, letting you spot which days are more expensive and identify what caused any spikes. And you can also submit meter readings directly through the app if you don’t have a smart meter or just want to provide a reading manually.

Yes! Octopus Energy is the UK’s largest energy supplier and very trustworthy. It’s part of the Octopus Group, which is a huge company that has businesses in a range of different industries, including real estate, financial advice, technology and investing.
It’s also a B-Corp, which means it’s signed up to put people and the planet as top priorities alongside profit. It has to meet strict criteria to be awarded B-Corp status. None of the other major energy companies are B-Corp.
Got a business? Octopus Energy has thought of you. You’ll get the same great rates, excellent customer service, renewable energy, and everything else you would expect from Octopus Energy, just with tariffs designed for businesses (like Shape Shifters).
Shape Shifters is a ‘time‐of‐use’ electricity tariff aimed at businesses. It incentivises businesses to reduce their electricity usage between the peak times (4-7pm). As energy is more expensive and less green during those hours. Again, it’s a win-win.
Octopus Energy combines renewable energy, competitive prices, and outstanding customer service. It’s easy to see why so many people love them.
None of their electricity is produced by fossil fuels and the gas is offset by carbon reduction projects (such as reforestation or renewable energy projects). They invest billions into innovative green projects like wind farms, solar and heat pumps. And it feels like they are just getting started.

If you own an electric car Octopus Energy has you covered with smart EV tariffs, home charging equipment, and access to a great public charging network.
Their app and website are easy to use, letting you track and manage your energy, and if you ever need help, their multi-award-winning customer service team is on hand to help.
